TRAVEL: Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria Jaro Church

Just when I thought I have uploaded all my summer in the islands photos, I realize there's more. Boy, was I trigger happy when we did a Visita Iglesia last holy week (springbreak for those who are in the US). Here's an interesting visit at Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria Jaro Church in Ilo Ilo. Correct me if I'm wrong but does the name mean: new maiden of the candle? LOL More after the jump!

Because the church I'm featuring now is a very historic one, let me share a trivial information about me that I just learned yesterday! So I was googling the Japanese characters for my name (Ku Mi Ko), when I found out that 13 days after I was born, a minor planet was discovered from Japan and it was named after the wife of the man who discovered the planet... that very minor planet was also named Kumiko. #trippy I love my name! :) What does yours mean? (competitive LOL)

Read on to know more about the featured cathedral on this post.

Besides the church itself, I was most fascinated by the bell tower adjacent to it. It looks like a lighthouse! I dream of seeing a lighthouse someday... someday...

Back to the cathedral, the main "feature" of the church is the supposedly miraculous image of Mother Mary which is displayed at the veranda of the church. People flock to it in prayer, of course, through candles.

She's such a beauty! Wow, check out the details of her gown.

Check out the details of the statue itself! Beautiful antique cherubim.

As mentioned, prayers were made through candles. I know I shouldn't have, but I read the prayers that were there at the time of our visit. The prayers range in "stories": from passing exams, to health and family concerns.

I'm not a very religious person but if there's one thing I am full of, it's hope. Sometimes, when we find ourselves in a dark grim place, hope is our salvation. That is why I have faith. I'm not a religious person but I have faith in something greater than who we all are.
My family.

Have you been to this church?

Think bright. Smile a lot. :)

  1. Iloilo is my dad's home town. I have only been there one night when i stopped over on the way to kalibo. :) I wish i can go back and explore some more. It's awesome to have a planet named after you. I guess I should just have to be content with the song. :D

  5. That is a beautiful!
The name is Our Lady of Candelaria. Candelaria doesn't mean candle, but it does have a Latin suffix for wax candle. Candelaria is just the name that is used for the Virgin Mary, although I am no entirely sure why. In a part of Mexico that my parents are from, we have a Virgin by the same name.
