Sunscreen 101: a primer on why you should use SPF with broad spectrum

Hello Sunshine! Today I'll get personal and go deep into how I treat my skin. Coming off from my notes from the recent Herbalife Skin event that I attended to, I will share with you some skin lessons that even the simplest regimen can accommodate.

So your skin, it's just the BIGGEST organ of your body; while also being your body's FIRST protective level against harmful environment factors. Why NOT care for it well?

Also, the skin reflects your inner health. Like when you're not rested, dehydrated, etc, you skin shows it. So again, why NOT take care of it well?

In the recent Herbalife Skin event that launched Herbalife SPF 30*, I took home some tips from Jacquie Carter, Herbalife's Director for Worldwide Outer Nutrition Training. It was a very intimate event where unlike your regular blogger programs, we had the pleasure of just enjoying a chit-chat with Jacquie to ask the beauty questions brewing in our heads. Of course, I didn't dare pass on the opportunity.

What are your skin's biggest concerns?

According to Jacquie, majority of our skin's concerns are due to two things: the sun and gravity. Now, we can't really do much about gravity apart from slow down the damages it can cause: mainly skin sagging.

To slow down gravity's pull, pun intended, it's always a wise idea to massage skincare on an upward motion. Also, NEVER pull your skin--especially if you've grown into the habit of pulling skin downwards. That habit can definitely speed time up!!!

Now for the sun, sure you also can't just remove the sun right? But there are lots to do to protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays. Aside from wearing the right clothes or accessories for physical protection: that's sunglasses for your eyes, a wide-brim hat for your face, etc; you can also get into the habit of wearing sunscreen--and not just an ordinary sunscreen. You must get one with UVA and UVB protection.

Just a primer on sunscreens, UVA and UVB--what's the difference?

Simple, take note that the A stands for AGING and B stands for BURNING. So sciences tells us that the sun has two UV rays, one that causes the skin to age, think sun spots and wrinkles, and one that causes it to get sunburnt, think red, sore skin that leads to flaking and eventual peeling.

I guess with the above differentiation, it's self-explanatory why you need to use a sunscreen that protects you from both. Cause both are levels of skin damage. Why protect yourself from just one kind???

Why and how to sunscreen?

I guess like majority of the population haha I, too, hate applying sunblock. I hate how icky it is. I hate how it sits on my skin. Even worse, I hate how it sits under make-up. Then, like those reasons aren't enough... I hate that you have to re-apply them!

But at the event, and with Jacquie's bubbly personality, I went home pretty convinced that I SHOULD wear sunscreen, and re-apply as needed.

"As needed" meaning you re-apply sunscreen if you feel like you've sweat out the layer of protection you applied in the morning--much rather the situation you'd end up with if you're mostly outdoors under the sun.

Fortunately, the recently launched Herbalife Skin Protective Moisturizer with Broad Spectrum SPF 30 combines moisturization and protection into one simple step--one that on a regular day (no swimming, no excess sun exposure) would not require you to re-apply sunblock!! Can I get a hell yeah?
